I (32 F) have been dating my boyfriend ( 25 M) for about a month. Things are going well, and we’ve been communicating openly so far.
Recently, I attended a local mingle/networking event with a girl friend of mine. I’m a realtor, and my main reason for going was to network and potentially get future business leads. My livelihood depends on making genuine connections. My boyfriend didn’t attend with me as he’s in Louisiana for the holidays.
At the event, I spoke to several people platonically, including one guy who was friendly and mentioned he’s interested in buying real estate later this year. I am not attracted to him at all. After the event, he invited me to see a movie, clearly framed as platonic. I checked in with my boyfriend and asked if he was comfortable with that, and he said yes, it was fine.
However, when I told my brother about this, he said I was being disrespectful to my boyfriend by talking to other men and especially by hanging out with one one-on-one. I explained that this was professional networking, that I was transparent with my boyfriend, and that my boyfriend explicitly said he was okay with it. Especially because of this guy does buy real estate with me it earns me $8k+ in income.
In a frenzy of emotion fighting with my brother about morals, I also said that I’m not going to throw away a potential real estate client or professional opportunity for a relationship that’s only a month old, especially when no boundaries were crossed. That comment upset my brother even more, and now he thinks I’m prioritizing money over my relationship and being inconsiderate.
For what it’s worth, I was in a very long previous relationship where I sacrificed a lot of my independence, and I’m trying to be more balanced and intentional this time.
So, AITA for hanging out platonically with a guy I met while networking, with my boyfriend’s knowledge and consent?
