AITAH for refusing to give my parents my spare key?
I recently moved into my own apartment and handled everything myself, lease, utilities, and day to day responsibilities. My parents asked for a copy of my spare key and said it was just in case of emergencies. I told them no and explained that I prefer to keep my space private.
In the past, when I lived closer or had shared access, they showed up without notice. Sometimes it was to drop something off, other times it was to check in, but it usually happened without asking first. There were times they let themselves in or expected me to be available just because they were nearby. Because of that history, I decided that giving out a spare key was not something I wanted to do in this situation.
After I refused, they pushed back and kept asking why I would not trust them with something so simple. They said parents should have access and that it is normal for family to have a key. I repeated that I am fine handling emergencies myself and that if something serious happened, I could always call them or the building management.
The conversation kept coming up again, even after I thought it was settled. They framed it as me shutting them out instead of it being about boundaries in my own home. I did not raise my voice or insult them, I just stayed firm and said no each time it was brought up.
I still do not plan on giving them the spare key, but the situation has turned into an ongoing issue. I want to live independently and control who has access to my apartment. AITAH for refusing to give my parents my spare key?
