AWTA for cutting off our neighbors after they falsely accused us of theft?
Dear Abby: My neighbor lost her ring — now she's accusing me of stealing it | New York Post
New account because I don’t want this on my main. I’m also a bit emotional about this, but I’ll try to stick to the facts.
We house-sat for our neighbors for years. Had a spare key. Never a single issue.
Last holiday, jewellery goes missing. They immediately accuse us, saying we were “the only ones with keys.” No proof. No benefit of the doubt. Just straight to blaming us.
We tell them their grandchild was in the house with her boyfriend — multiple times. We have doorbell camera footage. (our doorbell camera faces their front door) We showed them. They brush it off completely and say their grandchild “would never do that.” But they apparently decided we fucking would.
So we returned the spare key and shut down communication.
Then they call the police on us. We told the police the same thing we told the neighbours and gave them the footage.
Later, one of the missing pieces is found with the grandchild and boyfriend, who then confess to taking the jewellery and selling most of it.
Only after all that do the neighbors suddenly want to “clear the air.” Other neighbors now say we should just talk it out so we can go back to how it was. Yeah, fuck that. That’s not happening.
We’re civil. We say hello. But we’re not having fucking heart-to-hearts with people who were convinced we were fucking stealing from them. But they keep trying to talk, some of the other neighbours try to convince us to talk to them.
    AWTA for keeping our distance?
